Arbovirus Surveillance Reports - 2003 November 2003 There were 11 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) for a 0.8% seroconversion rate. This rate is similar to the mean for EEE historical activity for November. There were 124 new HAI Flavivirus positive sentinels (St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) antigen used in the HAI assay) confirmed as WN+ by IgM Elisa or Serum Neutralization during November, 2003 for a rate of 9.0%; this is higher than activity levels for last November, but the difference is not significant. The rate of seroconversion (% of birds seroconverting to positive antibody statue for each virus) has been computed, so that comparisons with years past when there were fewer total submissions may be made. Sera from 8 mammals and 2 wild birds were screened by HAI. Antibody to WN was detected in an osprey and a flamingo. Antibody to EEE was also detected in the osprey. Dead animals, primarily birds continue to be submitted for West Nile Virus detection in tissues. During November 2003, tissues from 70 birds and 3 mammals were received for arbovirus detection/isolation. Tissue from a baboon yielded an enterovirus relative. EEE virus was not detected. West Nile virus was detected in 21 birds from:
Of the 262 mosquito pools submitted, one was positive for WN virus:
October 2003 There were 8 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) for a 0.5% seroconversion rate. This rate is similar to the mean for EEE historical activity for October. There were 211 new HAI Flavivirus positive sentinels (St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) antigen used in the HAI assay) confirmed as WN+ by IgM Elisa or Serum Neutralization during October, 2003 for a rate of 13.3%; this is similar to activity levels for last October. The rate of seroconversion (% of birds seroconverting to positive antibody statue for each virus) has been computed, so that comparisons with years past when there were fewer total submissions may be made. Sera from 4 mammals and 97 wild birds were screened by HAI. Antibody to WN was detected in one dog and in 7 birds. Antibody to EEE was detected in 4 birds.
Dead animals, primarily birds continue to be submitted for West Nile Virus detection in tissues. During October 2003, tissues from 248 birds and 7 mammals were received for arbovirus detection/isolation. EEE virus was not detected. West Nile virus was detected in 52 birds from:
Of the 810 mosquito pools submitted, one was positive for WN virus:
Collier County submitted 142 pools that had been tested by VecTest during August. There had determined that 4 pools were WN positive, and 11 pools were equivocal positive, with faint bands for both SLE and WN. Molecular assays (TaqMan RT-PCR) for WN virus were performed in our laboratory on all pools and equivocal pools were also tested for SLE. No pools were SLE positive; 1 VecTest WN positive pools was negative by RT-PCR. WN virus was detected in 7 of the VecTest negative pools. Of the equivocal pools, 3 were WN positive by PCR, the remaining 8, were negative. Thus, in this study, if the equivocal test results are considered as positive, VecTest sensitivity was 46%, specificity 93%, predictive value of a positive test (PVP) 40% and predictive value of a negative test (PVN) 94%. If the equivocals are considered negative, the results are 23%, 99%, 75% and 93% respectively. September 2003 There were 12 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) for a 0.6% seroconversion rate. This rate is equal to the mean for EEE historical activity for September. There were 362 new HAI Flavivirus positive sentinels (St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) antigen used in the HAI assay) confirmed as WN+ by Serum Neutralization during September, 2003 for a rate of 19.2%; this is similar to activity levels for last September. The rate of seroconversion (% of birds seroconverting to positive antibody statue for each virus) has been computed, so that comparisons with years past when there were fewer total submissions may be made. Sera from 109 wild birds were screened by HAI. Alphavirus (EEE) antibody was present in birds from Okaloosa (3 bluejays, 5 blackbirds), Walton (2 bluejays, 3 cardinal) and Washington (1 blue jays, 1 grackle) counties. Flavivirus antibody was detected in birds from Okaloosa (2 bluejays), Walton (1 cardinal), Orange (1 rail) and Washington (2 cardinals, 1 grackle) counties. The rate of seroconversion (% of birds seroconverting to positive antibody statue for each virus) has been computed, so that comparisons with years past when there were fewer total submissions may be made.
