1999 Arbovirus Surveillance Reports collected by The Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Laboratories-Tampa, Florida, USA.

June 1999 There were a total of 5 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) during June in Bay, Flagler, Orange and Osceola counties. This is well below the average for June, but is similar to the level seen in 1998 and 1988-1990. There were no seroconversions to St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) during June.

July 1999 The numbers of sera submitted and counties participating in surveillance activities during July were similar to that for June. In the attached table, seroconversions which are listed as unconfirmed have not yet had a second serum ("rebleed") submitted from that bird. There were a total of 7 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) during June in Bay, Leon and Seminole counties. This is well below the average for July, but is similar to the level seen in 1998 and 1988-1990. There was one seroconversion to St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) during June, in Hendry county.

August 1999 The numbers of sera submitted and counties participating in surveillance activities during August were similar to July. In the attached table, seroconversions which are listed as unconfirmed have not yet had a second serum ("rebleed") submitted from that bird. There were a total of 4 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) during August in Leon and South Walton counties. This is well below the average for August, but is similar to the level seen in 1998, 1990 and 1988. There were 9 seroconversions to St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) during August, in Charlotte, Hendry, Indian River, Lee and Palm Beach counties. Sentinel Chickens

September 1999 The numbers of sera submitted and counties participating in surveillance activities during September were higher than that for July. In the attached table, seroconversions which are listed as unconfirmed have not yet had a second serum ("rebleed") submitted from that bird. There were a total of 9 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) during September in Citrus, Duval, Leon, Orange and Putnam counties. This is above the average for September , but is similar to the level seen in 1996, 1992, 1989 and 1988.
There were 63 seroconversions to St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) during September, in Brevard, Charlotte, Hendry, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lee, Manatee, Martin, Orange, Palm Beach Polk, Sarasota and St. Lucie counties. This is substantially above the median annual SLE seroconversion rate for September. Birds which seroconverted late in August and were confirmed in September had been submitted from Charlotte (1), Indian River (1), Lee (1) and Palm Beach (1) counties.
Plans are being developed to look for evidence of West Nile virus in Florida, pending approval of funding for this activity. Please let us know your thoughts on this issue. Sentinel Chickens


October 1999 There were a total of 6 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) during September in Leon, Volusia, and South Walton counties. This is close to the October average EEE. Birds which seroconverted late in September and were confirmed in October had been submitted from Citrus (1) county. There were 100 seroconversions to St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) during October, in Charlotte, Hendry, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lee, Manatee, Martin, Palm Beach, Pinellas and Sarasota counties. This is similar to 1993 and substantially above the median annual SLE seroconversion rate for October. Birds which seroconverted late in September and were confirmed in October had been submitted from Charlotte (4), Hillsborough (1), Indian River (1), Lee (6), Manatee (3), Orange (1), Palm Beach (1), Polk (1) and Sarasota (7) counties.  Sentinel chickens

November 1999 The numbers of sera submitted and counties participating in surveillance activities during November were less than for October. In the attached table, seroconversions which are listed as unconfirmed have not yet had a second serum ("rebleed") submitted from that bird. There were a total of 5 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) during September in Leon, Orange and Volusia counties. This is similar to the November average EEE. Birds which seroconverted late in October and were confirmed in November had been submitted from Leon (1), Volusia (1) and South Walton (1) county. There were 44 seroconversions to St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) during October, in Charlotte, Hendry, Hillsborough, Indian River, Lee, Manatee, Okeechobee, Orange, Palm Beach and Sarasota counties. This is similar to 1993 and above the median annual SLE seroconversion rate for November. Birds which seroconverted late in October and were confirmed in November had been submitted from Charlotte (5), Hendry (1), Hillsborough (1), Lee (3), Palm Beach (2) and Sarasota (3) counties. In the attached table, seroconversions which are listed as unconfirmed have not yet had a second serum ("rebleed") submitted from that bird. There were a total of 6 seroconversions to Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEE) during December in Hillsborough, Orange and Volusia counties. This is similar to the December average EEE seroconversion rate. There were 6 seroconversions to St Louis Encephalitis virus (SLE) during December, in Charlotte, Hillsborough and Lee counties. This is similar to the median annual SLE seroconversion rate for December. Birds which seroconverted late in November and were confirmed in December had been submitted from Charlotte (1), Hendry (2) and Lee (2). Sentinel chickens
