The Florida Anti-Mosquito Association (FAMA) was established at Daytona Beach, FL in 1922 following an epidemic of dengue fever in Miami the previous year. FAMA was the first organized gathering of mosquito workers in the state though efforts to control malaria began in Florida during World War I. The FAMA organization, along with the Florida State Board of Health Division of Entomology, strived to create local mosquito control districts through local and state legislative action. The first mosquito control law passed in Indian River County in 1925, thus creating the Indian River Mosquito Control District. Over the next ten years, four more MCDs were established. Currently there are over 50 mosquito control agencies throughout Florida. In 1990 the organization’s name was changed to the Florida Mosquito Control Association (FMCA) to better reflect the true efforts of the association.
