Tallahassee Legislative Days
The time is drawing near for FMCA’s Tallahassee Legislative Days scheduled for March
15-16, 2010. Your participation is very important this year, so we hope you can
put this on your calendar for attendance. Your visits can make in impact with the
legislators and it is important for mosquito control issues to stay on their radar.
This is a good opportunity to learn about issues that have an impact on mosquito
control at the state level and to participate in our government processes with visits
to your local elected officials. If you have never had an opportunity to visit your
House of Representative's and Senator's offices, you can learn first-hand about
this interesting and exciting process.
As you know, lasts year’s success was a result from the strong turnout for the 2009
Legislative Days and the visits to the legislators. DACS is again proposing to cut
~ 1 million dollars from the mosquito control program and reduce funding for mosquito
research. These funds are critical to many Florida mosquito control programs to
provide training, continuing education credits and professional development for
their employees. This 50% reduction in state aid to mosquito control and reduction
of mosquito control research will have a significant impact on many mosquito programs.
These cuts will have a substantial impact on mosquito control efforts and the ability
to protect public health. It is important for our legislators to hear why these
cuts should not happen and why this money is important to you.
If you plan to attend the legislative days, or have question about the Tallahassee
Days program, please contact FMCA’s Legislative Committee Co-Chairs - Dennis Moore
(727.376.4568) or Doug Carlson (772.562.2393). Doug and Dennis will be working up
the list of teams, so please let them know if you plan to attend. If you have never
attended before, don’t be concerned. You will be teamed with prior attendees who
are familiar with the procedures.
